Introduction

Mom, Dad & Son reading books on a couch and laughing.Kids Voting USA published a report in 2003 that stated that as students' instruction in government and civic processes increases, they begin to develop opinions on certain issues and subsequently pay more attention to news media so as to gather information to back up their opinions. They initiate discussions with parents, which gives them the confidence to discuss their opinions with their peers. Parents then respond by paying more attention to news media so that they can have the knowledge to have further discussion with children.

Leading up to the 2000 election, many newly turned 18-year-olds were asking the same question: "Why should I vote?" They are convinced that, in a climate where elections seem to turn on who spends the most money on TV ads, casting a ballot is meaningless. And they are not alone.

In 1998, fewer than one in five 18- to 24-year-olds voted. When asked why by researchers from the National Association of Secretaries of State, they cite a number of reasons: They feel ignored by politicians; they feel their vote doesn't really count; and they say that they don't get the kind of information they need to make an informed decision.

The survey concludes that the single factor that most influences whether a young person will vote is whether his or her parents vote. But almost half of this group reported that they never -- or almost never -- talked about politics, government, or current events with their parents.

Your role in shaping your child's civic attitude is vital, yet surprisingly simple. There is no rule that says you have to agree with your child on every issue, but having the knowledge to have those discussions will encourage your child to stay active in their community. Setting a good example is the foundation of fostering an attitude of civic awareness in your children.
